Bali Wood Mask- Trusting Turtle

Centering the forehead, a turtle gazes upon this mask made from traditional Albesia wood.  The artisan has beautifully handcarved this piece with a contrast between light and dark tones to bring out its true beauty.  The turtle is a sacred animal in Balinese mythology.  In Hindu philosophy the turtle symbolises the foundation supporting the earth and all its life.  The world turtle, Bedawang Nala, is believed to dwell in the underworld, where it carries the world on its back.  Masks such as this "Trusting Turtle" are usually remain in the family home, representing a bond of trust between family members.
